What’s hot in Saucon Valley? What’s not? May 2022 Edition

What’s hot?

Moravian sugar cake—it’s not just for chilly weather (Photo: CC license)

  1. Home-made or self-crafted yard ornaments and outdoor decor. One of my favorites is a hand-painted mailbox with birds on it on Magnolia. Anything people make themselves instead of buying—the more original, the better.

  2. PA House Restaurant

  3. Pressing the buttons on the new crosswalks

  4. Shimano DC fishing reels

  5. Billy Joel’s “Allentown” (it’s the 40 anniversary)

  6. Walking to places

  7. Sugar cake from Mountainview Moravian

  8. “Normal” graduation parties post-COVID (fingers crossed)

  9. Hellertown Area Library

  10. That oddly charming grumpy older guy at True Value. Hey, I don’t go because I need more friends. I go for reasonably priced services like screen replacements and blade sharpenings right in my back yard. He reminds me a little of the wisecracking appliances in the Flintstones. Local color, folks.

What’s not?

Budget landscape lights — just no (Photo: Screen-grab of Home Depot shopping page )

  1. Cheap landscape lighting

  2. Political or “expressive” flags—everyone’s sick of them ALL

  3. Colored mulch

  4. Bamboo—uncool and illegal

  5. Acting like you didn’t see those crosswalk lights

  6. Being louder than all your neighbors

  7. Graphic tees with punny sayings

  8. Trees that smell like semen

  9. Obligatory cloth masks

  10. Different types of string lights mixed together. Enough with the all-year “bistro lights” already.
