The Big Lie in my community

What do you do when so many of your fellow Saucon Valley citizens support the Big Lie when it's been meticulously disproven again and again and again and again?

I really don't know. They’re still flying their stupid Trump 2024 and Let’s Go Brandon flags. They’re falling deeper into Q Cultism. They’ve given over their lives to being Big Lie priests and priestesses, often at the expense of their own personal lives (or maybe because of them?).

Are people stupid? Are they gullible? Are they mentally ill? Are they cynically spreading a dangerous lie that has already led to people's deaths -- and may lead to more -- because of unresolved anger?

I can't believe they're ignorant at this point, unless by choice. The evidence of the Lie being a Lie is towering.

We now know definitively that former President Trump completely understood that he’d lost the 2020 election, the evidence was and remains enormous, and he just didn’t/doesn’t care.

He wanted to stay in power, American democracy be damned.

So what gives? Why are these people still spreading deceit if not to foment violence? Is that really what they want?

That so many people in Hellertown who purport to support veterans would also help spread the Big Lie tells us a lot about the difference between real patriotism and performative patriotism. You can’t truly support America and support the Big Lie. They’re mutually exclusive faiths.

They’re not the same—and never will be—except if American democracy falls, and then the issue won’t matter.

I’ve stepped back from some of the people I know who actively spread the Big Lie. I can't help them. I'm done trying. I don't think they want to be "helped." They look down on me, actually. I feel mostly confusion and sadness about them. I’m past the anger.

But some people can't be stepped away from. Old friends, family, neighbors—including quite a few loved ones.

I will pray, and I will continue to speak and write my truth, one day at a time.

Weak civics education has nurtured all this, but so has the news media. I’d love to know how many graduates of Saucon Valley High actually end up in real law schools. I’d love to hear. My guess is that the number is smaller than we’d like to think.

We need more students truly dedicated to defending our beautiful Constitution—with cool heads and rationality, not flag-waving and guns.

Most Hellertonians and Sauconites, I would venture to guess, know only the first two amendments of the Constitution.

I bet I could ask 20 people walking on the streets of Hellertown to describe, by number, any amendment besides 1 and 2, and I’d come up empty. Oh, how I would love to be proven wrong.
